Turning 65? Start Early.
You have a 7-month window to enroll in Medicare around your 65th Birthday — that’s 3 months before, your birthday month,
and 3 months after.
But don’t wait.
I recommend we talk at least 3–6 months before you turn 65 to avoid delays or penalties and give you time to compare.
IEP - Initial Enrollment Period
Turning 65? Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Your Initial Enrollment Period is a 7-month window around your 65th birthday. It includes:
- 3 months before the month you turn 65
- The month of your 65th birthday
- 3 months after that month
If you want your Medicare coverage to start on time — the first day of your birthday month — you should enroll during those 3 months before your birthday.
You don’t need to wait until you’re 65 to start the conversation. I recommend we talk at least 3–6 months ahead of time, especially if you’re still working or have other coverage in place.
